our story

He was a groomsman. She was a bridesmaid. It's a tale that might sound romcom-worthy, but it is, in fact, true - and that makes it that much better.

In July of 2021, JT and I were both looking forward to being in a wedding, he as a school friend of the groom and I as a lifelong buddy of the bride. We knew nothing of each other. He was traveling to Georgia from Michigan and I had never been to Michigan in my life.

We met briefly at the rehearsal dinner, just a hello to ward off any awkwardness of the bridal party not knowing one another. There were no flying sparks or fluttering hearts (that comes later).

For contextual purposes, I feel it is necessary to mention that JT is completely bald at this point in his life after a recent mohawk adventure (didn't know that at the time), and it could easily be believed that he was suffering from some sort of illness.

The day of the wedding comes, and we are both spending time with our respective sides of the bridal party throughout the day. At the reception, we happen to be in line together and talk a little more and then end up sitting at the same table with my two beloved sisters and a brother-in-law (more on him later).

We are all still talking as usual (no romming or comming yet). JT is a quiet man in these scenarios, so he is engaged in the conversation but not necessarily talking a whole lot. Then the dancing begins (my superbowl) and so the dance floor is my location for the next several hours.

In the meantime, it seems that JT was receiving some encouragement from said brother-in-law and a fellow groomsman to shoot his shot (if you will) SO at the end of the night as things are winding down, JT comes over (hammering heart in tow) and says...

"We're about to leave and I wanted to say bye and ask if we could stay in touch?"

I was in shock but did somehow manage to correctly communicate my telephone number, and we've managed to stay in touch and fall in love across those 800 miles between Grand Rapids and Atlanta.

We are so thankful to the Lord for writing our story and making it better than anything we could have imagined...and for the blessed grace of FaceTime, without which long distance will be much more difficult.
